1 c packed brown sugar
3/4 c shortening
1/4 c molasses
1 egg, beaten
2-1/4 c flour
2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cloves
Cream together brown sugar and shortening. Mix in molasses and egg. Add dry ingredients. Cover dough and refrigerate 1 hour before baking. Heat oven to 375. Shape dough into balls and dip tops in granulated sugar. Place balls, sugar side up, 3 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheets and bake 10-12 minutes or just until set. Makes 4 dozen.
