What a post title! Yes, there is such a thing as healthy fat! I grew up on manmade fat – in my mom’s cooking! We were in the throes of the science will improve our lives phase as a nation. Since my mom loved her family, butter was out, margarine was in. Lard was out (thank you, Mom) and vegetable shortening was in.
Turns out, manmade fat is bad for you! And also, God said, trim away the animal fat when you eat meat (Lev 3:17). Saturated fat in your diet is necessary, but get it from real organic non- messed- with dairy products, like full fat cheese, cream, milk, and butter from grass- fed cows (here is biblical proof that dairy, fat, meat, and grains will not kill you. The danger lies in gluttony, toxic overload, and manmade and processed gunk added to our food!).
Then there is vegetable oil. The problem with vegetable oil is that it comes from seeds – soybean (seed) oil, sunflower (seed) oil, safflower (seed) oil, canola (seed) oil, peanut (seed) oil. And seed oils are high in omega 6 essential fatty acids. We need omega 6 essential fatty acids in our diet – only we need them in combination with omega 3 essential fatty acids, in a 1:1 ratio. The average American gets about 10 to 20 times as much omega 6s as omega 3s in their diet. All that wonderful processed and fried food!
Stay away from processed fried food forever! The only fried food anyone should consume, ever, is food they have made at home themselves, using the proper frying temperature of 375 so that the food does not absorb the frying oil!
In my household, ideally all dairy and animal products are organic. It is more important to use organic animal products than organic produce, as the toxins in non-organics are concentrated in animal products. Then:
butter replaces margarine in baking;
Bertolli extra light tasting olive oil replaces vegetable oil in baking;
coconut oil replaces vegetable shortening in baking;
coconut oil replaces all other fats (including olive oil) in cooking;
extra virgin olive oil replaces vegetable oil in salad dressing.
Never replace a real egg with egg whites or egg substitutes.
And never replace organic butter for the table with substitutes.
Other fats I try to include in our diet, from the whole food:
avocadoes
coconut (Artisana coconut butter is yummy!)
eggs
nuts
olives
wild caught salmon and tuna
