The Hebrew paragraphs:
13:1-14 {s} David sought to bring the ark to Jerusalem, but the death of Uzziah made him fear
The Chiastic structure:
The Name, capitalized in the central axis, underscores that it is YHVH Himself who dwells between the cherubim; the mercy seat of the ark as His throne. In Scripture, cherubim always accompany or surround the presence or throne of YHVH, the Creator and Ruler of the Universe (Gen 3:24, Exo 25:18-22, Eze 10:1-2).
Therefore the ark isn’t just any old box, but the tangible reality of YHVH’s kingship on earth. The Torah provides specific instructions to transport it, ensuring appropriate reverence for YHVH is maintained: the Levites are to carry it on poles, properly covered (Num 4:5-6, 15), not on a cart no matter how new, as the ignorant and uncircumcised Philistines had done (1 Sam 6).
Israel’s neglect of the ark under Saul (vs. 3) led to a cultural unawareness, resulting in the ark’s improper handling. Uzza’s death for touching it was not a personal fault but a tragic consequence of this neglect.
As a result, David feared. The fear of YHVH, which is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom (Pro 1:7), was reintroduced to the culture. That the mountains melt like wax at the presence of YHVH (Psa 97:5) demands awe even from His children (Heb 12:28-29). Yet, that YHVH’s blessing rested on Obed-edom reveals His grace when His presence is honored.
When you consider that this awe of YHVH was over centuries woven into the psyche of Israel, can you then imagine what the veil, which separated the ark from the nation, being rent at the death of Yeshua on the cross said? (Mat 27:50-51.) It is a seismic shift of tectonic proportions. Through the blood of Messiah Yeshua, all now have open access to His presence and His Name.
