The Hebrew paragraphs:
17:1-2 {s} David desires to build a house for YHVH
17:3-7a {s} The word of YHVH came to Nathan: You shall not build Me a house
17:7b-15 {p} YHVH will build David a house, and his Seed will be established on the throne forever
17:16-27 {p} David: Who is like You? Let Your word be established, and bless Your servant’s house forever
The Strong themes:
17:1-15 {s+s+p} David will not build YHVH a house, but YHVH will build David’s house
The Chiastic structure:
And it will come to pass, when your days are fulfilled to go to your fathers, that I will raise up your seed after you, who will be of your sons, and I will establish his kingdom. He will build Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. I will be a Father to him, and he will be a son to Me, and I will not take My steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you. And I will establish him in My house and in My kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever. 1 Chr 17:11-14
The obvious fulfillment of YHVH’s word to David, that his son will build YHVH’s house, is that Solomon built the temple of YHVH (1 Kin 6–8). But then, those “forever”s. Three times in vs. 12-14 YHVH reiterates the eternal nature of the Davidic son’s kingdom and throne. Three, a Sign of Messiah in Scripture. The prophecy extends beyond Solomon (as his throne was not forever, 2 Kin 25:7) to Messiah (Luk 1:30-33).
What house is Yeshua building for YHVH? It is not a brick and mortar building:
Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” Then the Jews said, “This temple was built in forty-six years, and You will raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking about the temple of His body. Joh 2:19-21
He is building the house of His body, which is us, the assembly of believers (Eph 1:22-23). We are the dwelling place of His Spirit and of His presence in the earth in these days (1 Cor 3:16). We are the third temple.
So then, you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but fellow citizens with the saints and household of God, having been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. Eph 2:19-22
Coming to Him, a living cornerstone, rejected indeed by men but chosen and precious with God, you yourselves also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Pet 2:4-5
