Numbers 25, The Jealous God
Additional studies: Numbers Index
You might have heard the famous line that God is a jealous God. It shows up again and again in Scripture:
“…he was jealous with My jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal… because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.” Num 25:11-13
In the Hebrew, God says Phinehas was jealous with My own jealousy — בְּקַנְאוֹ אֶת־קִנְאָתִי (beqano et-qinati). It stacks the same root word twice to communicate strong emphasis, just as qodesh qodashim , “Holy of Holies,” means the Most Holy Place. The old English translators used ‘jealous’ here, but in modern English the word ‘jealous’ often means small, petty, or insecure. The Hebrew, however, paints a far richer and more beautiful picture, and ‘jealous’ simply doesn’t do it justice. Keep reading …
Psalm 92, The verbs of praise
Additional studies: Psalms Book Four (90-106) Index
Notice that the abstract concept of praise or thanksgiving, worship, grows out of the root of doing something with the hands. In the Hebraic worldview the act of worshiping God involves, yes, raising hands to Him in worship, but also includes doing the works that He has instructed us to do. ♥
2 Corinthians 5:1-10, Heavenly clothes
Additional studies: Corinthians Index
What stood out to me was the A pair. It seems that people will be in one of two states before the judgment seat of Christ—either clothed or unclothed. Not unclothed with clothes for an earthly body, but as an eternal spirit, unclothed without either the earthly body, or the heavenly one prepared for us by God. That is a terrifying prospect! But even those who are found to be further clothed will appear before the judgment seat of Christ, for that is what “all” means. … The judgment for the further clothed is “Well done!”
