Why a Damascus destruction watch? Because of the fate which God promises to those who wage war against Jerusalem, coupled with Isaiah’s oracle concerning Damascus:
Behold, Damascus will cease to be a city
And will become a heap of ruins. Isaiah 17:1
Israeli troops on the Golan Heights, the land which separates Israel from Syria, are on heightened alert for a Syrian attack during this Feast of Tabernacles week, “following a series of statements by Syrian President Bashar Assad that his military is preparing for war with the Jewish state.” Perhaps one of the statements they are referring to is Assad’s recent comment to the Spanish press that if Syria could not reach a peace agreement with Israel at the end of six months, then war would break out (Broken link, active October 9, 2006). Israel has been on heightened alert since Syria recently threatened to retake the Golan Heights, even hinting that it has the help of the Red Cross in the effort.
And could Syria be coordinating with the Palestinians? Following reports that Palestinians in the Gaza are readying for war, the Palestinian Authority president explained that his recognition of Israel’s right to exist is a political move whose ultimate aim is to destroy the Jewish state.
