Big David unblocked my sewing desk and sewing machine when we returned from hurricane Ian evacuation and I started on Baby David’s quilt right away. I will be adding pics to this post until the blanket is done.
- The pattern.
- The fabrics, 147 different in all, taken from my fabric stash.
- Cutting to specified dimensions.
- And lots of ironing.
- The dark tones.
- The medium tones.
- The light tones.
- Cutting strips …
- Sewing strips …
- Ironing strips …
- Assembling one block to see that I have understood the instructions.
- The corners are not lined up in my learning block. I will fix that.
- 10/14: Cutting the component pieces for the corner units out of pressed strips.
- A peek at the fabrics for one block.
- Assembly line cutting.
- Indispensable tools: Ruled cutting mat, Quilter’s acrylic rule, and rotary cutter.
- I decided to cut out all the component pieces for every block so Dave could have his kitchen back LOL.
- 48 sets of component pieces cut.
- 10/18: Sewing the corner units and component pieces for each block together.
- Four blocks done!
- Twelve blocks (that’s 1/4) done. I finished 18 blocks (1/3) of component pieces today.
- 10/19: Finished sewing components for the remaining 30 blocks, then pressed component seams.
- Making the final cut …
- … so Dave can have his kitchen back.
- 10/20: Finished ironing the components for all 48 blocks, and here they are, ready for sewing.
- I set them out in a 7×7 grid to make sure I have the right blocks next to each other. This photo will serve as a placement guide once I have the blocks completed.
- Sewing the component pieces together. I was able to complete these 16 blocks today.
- These blocks are remaining to be sewn.
- I have to press open the seams to complete each block. But this gives an idea of where I am at.
- 10/21: Pressing seams.
- All 48 blocks pressed and ready to sewn after the Sabbath!
- 10/23: Four more seams for each block, and they will be done. (Ooops, I need to flip the right side on this so the light squares form the cross ..)
- 10/23: Two of the seams done for all 48 blocks …
- Seams pressed for all 48 center sections, and the blocks are ready to assemble.
- All 49 blocks done, pressed, and ready to make into the quilt top! And I was so careful to align the corners to the best of my ability.
- 10/24: The 49 blocks laid out.
- I discovered I had one too many medium corners and one too few dark corners, so I quickly sewed a new block with dark corners.
- I got four rows sewn together before I called it a day.
- Where I will pick up tomorrow.
- 10/26: The finished quilt top. Now working on piecing the back.
- 10/27: Pieced the back.
- A blanket, cut down to fit, sandwiched between the top and back, pinned, and ready for quilting.
- 10/28: Quilt pinned, border pinned.
- The mitered corners. My machine can’t handle quilt thickness, so the rest is hand sewing.
- Ready for transport to Pensacola. We are leaving Sunday morning! I will finish the hand sewing while we are there.
