Genesis 39 and 40, Joseph the Messianic Type

There is an extraordinary number of threes in these chapters concerning the life of Joseph: he was made overseer three times (f0r his father, for Potiphar, and for the keeper of the prison); he was cast down three times (into a pit, into slavery, and into prison); three days figure in each dream he interpreted in prison. Three is a sign of Messiah in Torah, and the abundance of threes is telling us to pay attention, because here is a Messianic prophecy. The prophecy of Messiah, is that just as Joseph was cast down, so also was Messiah (Phi 2:5-8).

By studying all the instances of “the time of trouble” in Scripture, we learn that

- YHVH delivers His people in the time of trouble;
- He saves them out of their time of trouble;
- He is their hiding place, refuge, and strength during the time of trouble.

The Chiastic Structure reveals the central axis, the heart, of the book of Matthew, the record of the life of Yeshua: Mat 11:25-12:14, Rest in the easy and light yoke of Messiah. Recall that Messiah is the Living Word made flesh, full of grace and truth (Joh 1:14). Recall that Moses wrote about Messiah (Joh 5:46). If the Living Word is full of grace and truth in action, then it must be that the written Word, the shadow cast by the Living Word, is full of grace and truth in instruction. That grace, that truth, is a yoke light and easy to bear. Or, as John puts it, The commandments are not burdensome (1 Joh 5:3).
