Essential Studies.
Exodus 23 and 24, The immutable God of love
Additional studies: Exodus Index
Exodus 23, in explaining what ‘Honor the Sabbath day’ means, teaches that there is also a Sabbath year. Every seventh year, the land shall rest, and the owners of the fields will not plant or harvest what grows, but the poor, widows, and strangers will harvest what grows of itself. Just as the Sabbath of the seventh year extends grace to the land, the Sabbath of the seventh day extends grace to the owners, their beasts, and the servants of the house. So we find grace in the midst of law and commandment. Isn’t that what we would expect to find of the laws of the immutable God of grace?
Genesis 47, Strong theme
Additional studies: Genesis Index
The Strong Theme from Gen 41:1 to Gen 47:31 covers the entire narrative, so far, of Joseph’s position in Egypt as overseer. The big picture reveals that Joseph was indeed cast down in the will of God, to be brought up in the will of God, to preserve the life of Israel. But notice something else, that the Teaching Tool of Learning from the Narrative brings to light. In the process of preserving Israel, everyone else gets preserved too! The blessing of Abraham indeed reaches to all the families of the earth. When we consider that this narrative of Joseph as overseer and provider is the Prophetic Type of Messiah’s second coming in glory as ruler of all, what a wonderful future awaits Israel and everyone else!
Psalm 45, Righteousness and joy
Additional studies: Psalms Book Two (42-72) Index
And please notice that righteousness and joy are not mutually exclusive characteristics. But because the King has loved righteousness and hated wickedness, He was anointed with the oil of joy above all His companions. Righteousness and joy, like mercy and truth, often appear together in the Scriptures and are sisters; they walk together holding hands. ♥
