Essential Studies.
Exodus 2:23-4:26, Signs and wonders
Additional studies: Exodus Index
The weak plus strong paragraphs combined are proclaiming that because God is in covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and keeps His covenant in the forefront of His mind, He equipped Moses with the ability to perform signs—works which inspired open-mouthed wonder—testifying that their source was above the normal or natural, i.e., supernatural. These signs and wonders bore witness that God was a party to the covenant of which Moses was testifying before Pharaoh.
Psalm 48, The city of the great King
Additional studies: Psalms Book Two (42-72) Index
There are natural cities, and spiritual cities. Jerusalem is a natural city, a Natural Picture, a likeness or shadow, of the place where God’s name is established forever and His glory dwells among His people. And that place is the spiritual city of Zion, excellent in glory, excellent in strength, the City of the Great King.
Romans 5, Justification and sanctification
Additional studies: Romans Index
In Romans 5 we have a change of topic from justification (righteousness as legal standing imputed), to sanctification (righteousness walked out in the life). We can not earn justification. While we were still God’s enemies, Christ died for us. This act of love changes every human heart it touches. As well, we cannot even earn our sanctification. Have you ever heard the phrase, “There but for the grace of God, go I.” God pours His grace out on our hearts, which so influences us that it becomes our nature to choose His thoughts and His ways. But the source of that new nature remains His grace, and not our effort. On that day, no flesh will be able to boast before God.
