The Hebrew paragraphs:
25:1-11 {p} The seed of Abraham by Keturah
25:12-18 {p} The seed of Ishmael
25:19-34 {p} The seed of Isaac
The Common Theme of these three paragraphs can be more easily seen this way:
Gen 25:1-11 {p} The offspring of Abraham by Keturah
Gen 25:12-18 {p} The offspring of Abraham by Hagar (Ishmael’s seed)
Gen 25:19-34 {p} The offspring of Abraham by Sarah (Isaac’s seed)
Suggesting a Strong Theme: Gen 25:1-34 {px3} The record of all the offspring of Abraham
This is important, because Abraham’s covenant with YHVH is going to be passed down to his offspring. Which offspring?
And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac. Gen 25:5
Isaac then had two sons, Jacob and Esau, by the miraculous intervention of YHVH, for Rebecca was barren, as Sarah had been before her (the miraculous birth of Messiah Yeshua is foretold in these patriarchal seeds of promise). Of them, God says, “Esau I hated, but Jacob I loved (Rom 9:13).” WHY?
Thus Esau despised his birthright. Gen 25:34b
The Teaching Tool of History that Prophesies is revealing that it is not merely the seed of the flesh who inherits the promise of God or the covenant of God, but the seed of the promise of the Spirit. By this history, God is revealing that the one who rejects Him and who esteems Him lightly, He rejects, but the one who loves Him and desires Him, He loves and establishes His covenant with him.
Why, in each case, did the covenant with God go to the second- born son (Isaac, and Jacob)? God commands in His Torah that it is the firstborn who is to receive the inheritance of the firstborn (Deu 21:15-17). Is God countermanding His own Torah? NO.
But by it, He is revealing that something greater than the flesh is here. He is inviting us to dig deeper to see how God is not contradicting Himself and His Word. And by doing so, Paul received the revelation that those who are the children of God, are those who are of the promise, and that circumcision is a matter of the heart.
