The Hebrew paragraphs for this chapter:
32:3-33:17 {s} Jacob renamed Israel, “Upright of El”
33:18-20 {s} Jacob acquires property in Canaan, and builds the altar of God
The Genesis 32:3-33:17 paragraph resolves into a Chiastic Structure with an imbedded Messianic prophecy. Look at the matched Scriptures of the C pair.
1C:
And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a MAN with him until the breaking of the day. Gen 32:24
2C:
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, “For I have seen GOD face to face, and my life is preserved.” Gen 32:30
Who did Jacob wrestle with, Man or God? It is God and Man, a pre-incarnate appearance of Messiah Yeshua.
Why This Matters: Not only did passages like this one teach the apostles, and Paul, the doctrines and nature of Messiah Yeshua; but they also bear witness that the Hebrew and Greek Testaments are not opposites, but a unified interconnected whole. After all, Yeshua said, “Moses wrote about Me” (Joh 5:46), and here we see it in action.
