I took a picture of this picture which I saw hanging in Marie and Les’ home yesterday:
It says, “Gott segne unser heim,” which is German, and means “God bless our home.” I remember this hanging in Great Grandma and Great Grandpa Kane’s home when I was a child. Once when I asked Grandma about it, she told me what it meant, and that her family was German, and that they spoke German in their home until she was 17. Then World War I broke out, and her daddy came home that day (this would be Julius Hunziker on the family tree) and said, “We are Americans. We are not Germans. We will no longer speak German in this house, but English only.” And they never did again. 🙂 But she said the picture was her family’s, which she inherited from her mother. I realize that since Marie inherited it, it will probably be passed down to Jane or Jerry, but I took a picture of it just in case I could at some point find an artist or craftsman who could duplicate it. You never know! I am such a sap for family history!
