A homeschooled teen in California has won the Westinghouse Competition (Broken link, active December 6, 2005) in Math, Science, and Technology, by working on a 19th century math problem and coming up with a new way to design aircraft wings in the process. He spent 6 months on the project. One of the benefits of homeschooling is the ability to narrow the field of subjects, allowing a maximum amount of time in the day for sustained study, which helps to develop real thinking skills in children. Listening to sound bites for 45 minutes a day times 6 does not engender depth of thought.
