Dave and I evacuated our home on September 7, 2017, the day prior to the above pic (courtesy of NASA). We drove to Colorado with a few belongings, expecting to be back in Florida to resume normal life in a week or so.
Unfortunately, our house and office was hit by a tornado spawned by Hurricane Irma on the night of September 10 when the storm passed through our area, and received the most damage of all the homes in our neighborhood.
Mike took these pics of the damage the morning of September 11:
- Collapsed front wall.
- The roof was torn off and found upside down and turned around in the side yard. (That’s why we think the damage was caused by a tornado spawned by the hurricane.)
- My office, without a roof.
- The front room. The windows, which were not damaged, protected my sewing desk from getting hammered.
- Mike put up tarps over the openings from the front room to the rest of the house, to protect it from further damage.
- That’s our lime tree uprooted and lying on its side.
- The carport roof is also gone.
The hurricane took the roof off and collapsed our front room wall, and there was extensive water damage throughout. The house was not inhabitable. Dave flew back to Florida as soon as our local airport was cleared to begin cleanup. I stayed at Ballinger’s until the house would be inhabitable again.
First set of recovery pictures:
- At least our front room windows survived without a scratch! Go Pella!
- A neighbor’s church youth group came to help.
- Packing up what can be salvaged to take to storage.
- House empty, now clearing away debris.
- Nailing plywood over the open wall going to the rest of the house to protect it from the weather.
- Neighbors came to help rebuild the exterior wall.
- Wall up!
- And a new roof …
