Now that Syria is openly threatening Israel, I would not want to be living in Damascus right now. Why? Because Isaiah delivered an oracle concerning Damascus which has never been fully fulfilled:
Behold, Damascus will cease to be a city
And will become a heap of ruins.
Isaiah 17:1, but read the whole chapter, (good explanation here (Broken link, active July 31, 2006)).
There has never been a time since its founding (by Uz, the grandson of Shem) that Damascus has not been a city. There has never been a time when Damascus has been a heap of ruins. Thus, this part of this oracle, at least, is still to come. So, if I were Assad, I would not be testing the Lord’s patience right now, especially with this sword of Damocles hanging over my head.
