Genesis 11:1-9, The tower of Babel rebellion, a pivotal event in human history
Additional studies: Genesis Index
The Tower of Babel incident is one of the pivotal events in the history of the world and in understanding Scripture. We saw yesterday that God had told Noah, when he emerged from the ark, to “be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth,” (Gen 9:1). Josephus records in the Antiquities of the Jews, that after five generations had been born on the earth, God repeated this command to Noah, for by the fifth generation, the eight persons who had emerged from the ark had increased to a sufficient number to send out colonies. Nimrod instituted a rebellion against God among them as they journeyed to their places. Instead, “Let us build a tower, lest we are scattered abroad over the face of the earth …”
Job 1 and 2, An Introduction to Job
Additional studies: Job Index
Job was settled in the land of Uz, the son of Aram, the son of Shem, when his book opens. His generation came after the general migration of families, which took place in Peleg’s day (for in his days the earth was divided); thus we find him settled in the family allotment of Aram (modern-day Syria). He was born in the 6th generation after the Flood, sharing the same generation as Reu, so we assume his birth was similar to Reu’s numbers, ~ 131 years following the Flood (Gen 11:18). He would have been a young man of ~30 years when the 7th generation began.
Psalm 6, When God hears

Now we see that the flip side of shama also applies: When God has heard (shama) the believer’s prayer, meaning, to not just hear, but to hear and then to answer, then David has assurance that the answer to his prayer is on its way.
Matthew 4, Every word that proceeds
Additional studies: Matthew Index
Answering temptation with the Word of God requires a certain knowledge of the Word. If we are unfamiliar with the Word, this is a good reason to read in it every day and become familiar with it. Over time, as the treasure of the Word is stored up in the heart, the Holy Spirit can bring a specific answer to the mind that will defeat what the devil is trying to do, just as each temptation was defeated by Yeshua’s response.
