Essential Studies.
Job 33 and 34, Elihu’s introduction
Additional studies: Job Index
Elihu is speaking a prophecy of Messiah, for he recognizes Job’s need for an intermediary who is as Job is, formed out of clay (vs. 6). And then when our lives were drawing near to the Pit, our Mediator vouched for our righteousness before God, so that God instead extended grace to us (vs. 24) because He has found a ransom for us. God restores man’s right standing (vs. 26b) that has been vouched to Him by the Mediator (vs. 23). Elihu did not realize it, but the righteousness that our Mediator vouches for us, is His own righteousness which has been imputed to us! ♥
Psalm 22, Messianic prophecy
Additional studies: Psalms Book One (1-41) Index
Because of the first half of the Psalm which declares the amazing prophecy of Messiah Yeshua’s crucifixion, we will have the second half, which describes the glorious reign of Messiah in His kingdom, to the ends of the earth. All the families of the nations will be restored to God to worship before Him (vs. 27). This is a direct Common Theme teaching backward to the Tower of Babel rebellion against God (Gen 11:1-9), where all the families of the nations gathered together as one to reject God as Creator and God (and is the historical root of paganism), and a direct Common Theme teaching forward to the vision of John recorded in Rev 7:9-10, of all the families of earth, gathered together as one before YHVH on His throne, worshiping Him. Another way to say it: the first half declares Messiah’s first advent as the Servant who suffered for all. The second half declares Messiah’s second advent as the King who rules in righteousness over all.
Matthew 16, Redeemed Identity
Additional studies: Matthew Index
Peter first tells Yeshua who He is, and then Yeshua tells Peter who he is. This knowledge of who Yeshua is, coupled with the knowledge of who we are in Him is the rock upon which Yeshua builds His church, that the gates of hell cannot prevail against. Identity.
As to Yeshua’s identity, He is the Anointed One (mashiyach, Messiah) whom the Law and the Prophets declare. He is the One who has authority over heaven and earth, who has delivered us from all the power of the evil one, and who has given His church like authority (Luk 10:19, Mat 28:18). As to our identity, we are who the Father declares us to be, and not who the enemy derisively declares us to be, or who our own hearts condemn us to be. It is the Father who is the truth-teller. When we become grounded in who Yeshua is, and who we are in Him, then we become an unstoppable force against which the gates of hell cannot prevail.
