Essential Studies.
Exodus 13, The redemption of the firstborn
Additional studies: Exodus Index
Exodus 13 weaves together two instructions that look like separate topics to us, but are actually one inseparable heartbeat: the redemption of the firstborn, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Why? Because Israel’s firstborn were spared by the blood of the Passover lamb, and every year after, we mark it on our hand (by doing the feast), we bind it on our forehead (by remembering the memorial), and we tell our children when they ask. These aren’t random rituals—they’re living parables, concrete signs that speak from one generation to the next: “We were slaves, the blood of the Lamb redeemed us, and that same blood still redeems today!” Yeshua Himself said Moses wrote about Him (Joh 5:46), and here He is, right in the middle of the matzah—our Messiah, the Firstborn over all creation.
Job 38:4-7, Sons of God and morning stars
Additional studies: Job Index
The use of “sons of God” in Job 38:7, who were present with God when He laid the cornerstone for the foundation of the earth, who is Messiah Yeshua, shows that in this case it cannot be talking about sons of the gods or sons of the rulers. These sons of God were not human men, but likely angels as used elsewhere in Scripture: Gesenius noted that elohiym sometimes can mean angels, based on the authority of Heb 1:6 and 2:7, 9.
Psalm 24, This is Jacob
Additional studies: Psalms Book One (1-41) Index
This does not mean that the physical descendants of Abraham have been replaced by Christians! It does mean, that any who believe in God, who have faith in Jesus Christ, who seek the Lord’s face, are the seed of Abraham as Jacob is – for all who are of Jacob, seek YHVH’s face. Jacob had a brother, remember, who was also a physical descendant of Abraham. Esau did not seek YHVH’s face, but instead despised his birthright (the inheritance of his fathers, which was the promises and the covenant of YHVH God). Isaac and Jacob sought YHVH from faith, whereas Ishmael and Esau did not. Thus Isaac and Jacob are counted the seed of Abraham and heirs according to the promise, as are any who believe in Him and seek after Him.
