Joshua 11:1-23 Chiastic Structure:
For it was of YHVH to harden their hearts, to come against Israel in battle, that they might be utterly destroyed, that they might have no favor, but that they might be destroyed, as YHVH commanded Moses. Jos 11:20
We have seen this scenario before.
“And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt. But Pharaoh will not heed you, so that I may lay My hand on Egypt and bring My armies and My people, the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments. And the Egyptians shall know that I am YHVH, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from among them.” Then Moses and Aaron did so; just as YHVH commanded them, so they did. Exo 7:3-6
The Canaanites were the only people, from that time to this, whom God commanded to be utterly destroyed. They were the most depraved people on the face of the earth, engaging in profane relations with their kin, and each other, and even animals, and daily sacrificing children to their gruesome god. The only others who were utterly destroyed, leaving none that breathed, were those who lived before the Flood.
Then YHVH saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Gen 6:5
