Read Joshua 12 here (text coming …) or at Bible Gateway.
The Hebrew paragraphs:
12:1-6 {s} Israel dispossessed Sihon and Og east of the Jordan
12:7-8 {p} Israel dispossessed the kings west of the Jordan and gave it to Israel
12:9-24 {p} Thirty one kings of the Canaanites west of the Jordan destroyed
Josh 12:8 concludes a Strong Theme begun in the last chapter …
11:6-9 {s} Joshua utterly defeated them according to the word of YHVH
11:10-20 {s} Joshua utterly destroyed all according to the word of YHVH
11:21-23 {s} Joshua utterly destroyed the Anakim from the land
12:1-6 {s} Israel dispossessed Sihon and Og east of the Jordan
12:7-8 {p} Israel dispossessed the kings west of the Jordan and gave it to Israel
… making the following Chiastic Structure:
11:6-12:8 {sx4+p} Strong Theme: Joshua utterly destroyed all, the Canaanites east and west, and the Anakim, and gave the land to Israel.
The Strong Theme is simply emphasizing that God told Moses to exterminate the Canaanite nations which had settled in the land promised to Abraham, and that Moses and Joshua did so.
When YHVH your God brings you into the land which you go to possess, and has cast out many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you, and when YHVH your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them. Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to their son, nor take their daughter for your son. For they will turn your sons away from following Me, to serve other gods; so the anger of YHVH will be aroused against you and destroy you suddenly. Deu 7:1-4
But of the cities of these peoples which YHVH your God gives you as an inheritance, you shall let nothing that breathes remain alive, but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, just as YHVH your God has commanded you, lest they teach you to do according to all their abominations which they have done for their gods, and you sin against YHVH your God. Deu 20:16-18
