Joshua 14:1-19:51 Chiastic Structure:
Again, that the inheritance of the Levites is YHVH, and not material goods, is the central axis of the entire structure telling the story of the division of the land to the twelve tribes.
Before someone accuses YHVH of being wrathful and vengeful, in that the Canaanites were displaced, and Israel claimed the land and the cities, in fact, when Noah divided the earth among his seventy grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the 5th generation after the Flood, he assigned this land as YHVH’s possession, as YHVH instructed him to do. Canaan was assigned an entirely different possession of land. But, as we saw in Genesis 11, the family of Cush rebelled against the command of YHVH, and the command of Noah, and took whatever land they pleased. There was even a war between the descendants because of it.
The Canaanites usurped the land, and when their iniquity was filled to the full, Joshua and Israel reclaimed the land that was theirs by right from the foundation of the world.
