Leviticus 9:2-22 resolves into an elegant Chiastic Structure …
..,. with the following central axis:
And all the congregation drew near and stood before YHVH. Lev 9:5b
We have already seen that the purpose of bringing an offering was to draw near to YHVH as an act of worship. Yet the people could not simply offer their own sacrifices. They had to bring their offerings to the priest, and he would present them on their behalf, just as YHVH commanded.
Why This Matters: YHVH established the priesthood and entrusted the priests with the responsibility of offering sacrifices—both for themselves and for the people.
For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. Heb 5:1
Scripture is teaching us that no sacrifice we could offer for ourselves would be sufficient to atone for sin. But what the anointed priest offers on our behalf—that does achieve atonement. The Aaronic priesthood served as a Prophetic Type, pointing forward to Yeshua, our eternal High Priest.
For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. Heb 7:26-27
