Luke 20:1-47 Chiastic Structure:
“Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken, but on whomever it might fall, it will crush him.” Luk 20:18
A cornerstone is a foundational stone placed at the corner of a new building, often the first stone laid, which aligns and stabilizes the building’s walls. It’s typically large, strong, and precisely shaped to ensure structural integrity.
The chief cornerstone or foundation, which the builders (the chief priests, scribes, and elders) rejected, is Messiah Yeshua. My understanding of breaking and crushing is this. All mankind has to make a decision about the chief cornerstone which the builders rejected.
Someone can come voluntarily and fall on Him, becoming broken at His feet because of the realization of their sins, just as the sinner before the Temple was broken, not even raising his eyes to heaven, in Luke 18:9-14. That humble and broken attitude receives His substitutionary death on the cross for forgiveness of sins, and receives a new heart and a new spirit as the prophets prophesied (Eze 36:26).
Or someone can harden themselves and refuse to either realize their sins, or humble themselves, or receive Him, as the chief priests, scribes, and elders were in the process of doing. Because of that hardness, when He falls on them, in judgment implied, they will be crushed.
It’s as if Jesus is saying, Brokenness is going to happen, one way or the other. Therefore, choose well!
