Essential Studies.
Numbers 21, The bronze serpent
Additional studies: Numbers Index
In fact, the serpent was on the pole, because when Yeshua was on the cross, the sins of the whole world–the fruit of the serpent–were laid upon Him. Sin was crucified with Yeshua, and when He was raised to life again, sin stayed dead in the grave!
Psalm 90, Chiastic structure
Additional studies: Psalms Book Four (90-106) Index
The psalm contrasts the eternity of God and the surety of His works, with the brevity of man who returns to dust. Returning to dust is not our created state, but mortality was the consequence of our choice of sin rather than obedience to God (Gen 3). Sin is forbidden because it hurts self and others; returning to the dust puts an end to the damage one man can do to another. When we contemplate the eternity and majesty, the authority and wisdom of God, we gain a heart of wisdom, especially when we compare His steadfastness from generation to generation, to the brief span of our lives. For those who have gained this wisdom, who have repented of sin, and who spend their lives worshiping God instead of hurting others, may His beauty and grace be upon them, and may the work of their hands be established to endure to His glory! Amen. ♥
2 Corinthians 3:6, The letter kills but the Spirit gives life
Additional studies: Corinthians Index
But take a fallen man, transform him and fill him with the Holy Spirit, by which he is given a new heart and his heart of stone (of his sin nature) is removed from him, so that he now walks in this earth filled by the Holy Spirit of God. Then what flows out of his heart is his desire to worship God (commandment 1), tear down idols (commandment 2), honor those things that are His (commandments 3-5), preserve life (commandment 6), and so on. His nature has been transformed, and now he obeys the Law because it is his heart’s desire to do so. Since YHVH taught us that walking in His commandments gives life, Paul says that the Spirit gives life.
