You might have heard the famous line that God is a jealous God. It shows up again and again in Scripture:
“…he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal… because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.” Num 25:11-13
The old English translators used ‘jealous’ here, but in modern English the word ‘jealous’ often means small, petty, or insecure. The Hebrew, however, paints a far richer and more beautiful picture, and ‘jealous’ simply doesn’t do it justice.
Zealous. Strong’s H7065 קנא qana, “to become very red;” i.e., “to be jealous, to envy, to burn with zeal.”
quph ק = sun on the horizon (condense, circle, time)
nun נ, ן = seed (seed, continue, heir, son)
aleph א = ox head (strength, power, leader)
According to the Ancient Hebrew Lexicon, the ancient verb meant, “to acquire;” the concrete noun from that verb, “a nest;” the abstract concept, “zealous.” Birds acquire, that is, gather materials (as light gathers to the sun on the horizon, quph) for their eggs (nun) in order to build a nest. The parable is of being protective of one’s nest (quph + nun) to the strongest degree (aleph).
It’s fierce, protective passion for one’s own, the kind of love that will not share what is most dear.
Why This Matters. That is the heart of our God. When Scripture says He is a zealous God, it means He guards His own honor and holiness with that fierce, protective passion—and He guards the covenant relationship He has built with us with that same unyielding strength. Why? Because we are most dear to Him.
