And when Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table. But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? For this fragrant oil might have been sold for much and given to the poor.” But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always. For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.” Matthew 26:6-13
Today Aunt Kellie and I went to the women’s Bible study at the church. It was so amazing – it was our first time, and we had no idea they served a brunch, that there would be a beautiful worship time just like in church, and that the teaching would be so wonderful. It was about the above story, and how today, we are like alabaster flasks filled with very costly fragrant oil – the fragrance of the knowledge of Him, the fragrance of His love. We are to be broken, so that His fragrant oil can be poured out to everyone around us in need. Here are some of the memorable quotes I wrote down in my notes:
“We become full by emptying ourselves for others. We live by dying.”
“If you want to go higher with Jesus – go lower with others.”
“In a world that couldn’t care less, we need to be people who couldn’t care more.”
And this quote was attributed to Erma Bombeck before she died: “When I stand before God, I hope that there isn’t one drop of fragrance left.”
“And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’” Matthew 25:40
