But Israel did not heed, and did not repent. At this stage in history the powerful in Israel were prospering by laying ever increasing burdens on the poor until they were weighed down, unable to bear the burden. Therefore YHVH said to Israel that He was weighed down from bearing them (Amo 2:13); therefore the strength and might of the strong and mighty shall not avail them on the day YHVH’s devouring fire comes to devour.
Psalm 44, Past salvation amid present suffering

Circumstances do not necessarily reflect reality, but God’s Word. When circumstances contradict God’s Word, which one is lying? Circumstances. The circumstances Israel was facing: adversaries, reproach, shame, seemed solid; but the reality was God’s acceptance of them and delight in them (vs. 3), not rejection of them. The fact is, there will be shadow of death circumstances sometimes in our life; but the reality? “Even though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will not fear evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” (Psa 23:4)
2 Corinthians 13, The test of faith
Additional studies: 1 & 2 Corinthians Index
Truth reveals itself under testing and examination. This is why witnesses are cross- examined on the witness stand: examination shines a spotlight on both truth and falsehood. Truth is confirmed, and falsehood which has been masquerading as truth, is also revealed: the mask comes off. So what is the test of faith? Fruit. He is saying, Don’t be deceived, flock, because God is not deceived. If you are truly in the faith, then the fruit of your life will be the second witness along with the words of your mouth.
