4 c flour
4 T baking powder
2 tsp sugar
1-1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 c butter, cold
2 c buttermilk, cold
Sift together dry ingredients into a large bowl. Cut in the butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center, pour in the buttermilk, and stir in just until dough holds together. The dough will be sticky. Turn out on a floured surface and gently fold over 6 times. Pat out to 1-inch thickness. Cut out with 2- inch round biscuit cutter and place on a buttered baking sheets, with sides touching. Pat scraps together and cut out to use all the dough. Bake at 450 for 12-15 minutes, until light gold brown. Brush the tops with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven. This is supposed to make 18 biscuits, but I can only ever get 12 biscuits out of it.
Colorado family, cut your leavening in half! Especially the baking powder.
