YHVH’s Shepherd’s staff is both a rod to direct in paths of righteousness, and a staff of protection to bring comfort in times of danger. It repeats the two inseparable sides of the salvation coin found throughout Scripture: Grace and Law, Faith and Works, Spirit and Word, Mercy and Truth, Sanctification (right living) and Justification (right standing).

The things the enemy speaks to grow a disappointment into a sorrow, is a perverse tongue (Pro 15:4). Perverse tongue statements are untruths easily refuted by the true word of God. If we listen to the perverse tongue, then our sorrow becomes a crushing weight that breaks the spirit. But if, instead, we listen to the wholesome tongue–the truth of the word of God–that truth becomes a tree of life. If we feed on the tree of life consistently, we find ourselves weathering storms and sorrows with joy.
