Essential Studies.
Genesis 45 and 46, Thematic analysis
Additional studies: Genesis Index
If we outline the single paragraph of Gen 44:18-46:7, we find three distinct events where humans would have ended the paragraph if we were in charge of making {s} or {p} paragraph divisions:
1. Gen 44:18-34: Judah pleads to take Benjamin’s place;
2. Gen 45:1-15: Joseph reveals himself to his brothers;
3. Gen 45:16-46:7: Jacob goes down to Egypt to live under Joseph’s care.
Yet the Torah deliberately runs these three events together in one unbroken paragraph, weaving Judah and Joseph into a single, seamless portrait. Now the three shine a spotlight on Messiah Yeshua’s ministry:
1. Gen 44:18-34: Yeshua’s first advent as the substitutionary sacrifice;
2. Gen 45:1-15: Yeshua reveals Himself to His brothers, for they do not recognize Him until He makes Himself known, in the intervening centuries;
3. Gen 45:16-46:7: Yeshua’s second advent as ruler and provider.
Or, Torah highlighting by Prophetic Type the ministry of Messiah Yeshua, preaching the Gospel of grace.
Nehemiah 8 and 9, And the holy convocation
Additional studies: Nehemiah Index (in process)
Neh 8 contains a description of a holy convocation as is commanded on feast days and holidays. The first day of the seventh month, when they assembled together at the Temple, was the Feast of Trumpets. A holy convocation is commanded on the feast day of Trumpets, as on the Sabbath and other annual feast days as well (Lev 23).
Proverbs 26 and 27, The contentious woman
Additional studies: Proverbs Index
YHVH said of them that their contentions were a rejection of Him. We can see that: Moses was a hand- picked leader for them, deliverance from slavery, manna, sweet water, the Promised Land — all gifts from the Father’s hand. We can disdain the children of Israel for their complaints, but are we so different? When we have complaints about our husband, children, home, or life, aren’t we really contending with YHVH, the gift- giver?
