Sarah and I are starting our detox diet today. For the next eleven days, besides eating everything that we must include in our diet every day, we must avoid, because they are liver stressers and/ or nutrient drains:
sugar in all forms
artificial sweeteners
refined carbohydrates
gluten
pork (which we avoid anyway because God said to avoid it; doing my first detox diet years ago was my first clue that perhaps God had a good reason for giving the instructions He did concerning pork – imagine that!)
soy
transfats and fried foods
caffeine
over the counter and prescription drugs
We do try to use organic meat, dairy, eggs, and produce during our detox. But because all that is expensive, it is more important to use organic animal products than produce. Because toxins concentrate in animal products more than in produce. Although we should always buy organic apples and berries, if at all possible. But just wash all your produce really well, especially if it has been waxed and you are eating the peel.
Here is today’s menu:
breakfast: apple cinnamon oatmeal, made with 1/4 c rolled oats, 2 T unsweetened coconut, 2 T chopped pecans or walnuts, dash of salt, 1 pkt stevia, and a few dashes of cinnamon. Grate 1 apple into the oatmeal, stir in with 1/2 c water and microwave for 2 minutes. Eat with milk or coconut milk. Drink freshly squeezed juice of 1 orange or eat with two clementines.
check off 1 of 2 fiber rich, and daily citrus.
morning snack: put 8 oz plain unsweetened yogurt in a blender. Add 1 c frozen strawberries, 1 pkt stevia, and a dash of vanilla extract. Blend until smooth. Yum! My favorite morning snack! If you are still impossibly full from breakfast like I am, have this for dessert with lunch.
check off 2 of 2 fiber rich.
lunch: make salad of 1 c combined raw swiss chard and beet greens, with 1 c baby lettuces. Add 1 c broccoli slaw. Eat with 5 oz chicken salad (made with homemade mayonnaise).
check off daily crucifer, daily dark green leafies, 4 oz of protein, and daily omega 3 rich fat.
afternoon snack: the day before, roast one head of garlic. Let cool. Combine roasted garlic with 8 oz cream cheese. Eat 1 oz of this dip with 2 stalks of celery, cut up.
check off daily sulfer rich and daily liver healing.
dinner: Ree’s white chicken enchiladas made with warmed, not fried, corn tortillas; Elise’s spanish rice made with brown rice, guacamole, and restaurant- style salsa. I do not have time to make the most perfect ever fresh tomato salsa today! Although I wish I did.
Check off remaining 4 oz of protein.
And if we also drink half our body weight in ounces of water today, we successfully completed our first day of detox, by getting in all the must haves and avoiding all the must not haves! And hopefully, we successfully made our men happy with our cooking too!
