Read Exodus 12:21-36 at Bible Gateway.
Hebrew paragraph divisions
Exo 12:21-28 {s} Israel observed the Passover as YHVH had commanded Moses
Exo 12:29-36 {p} Final plague: death of the firstborn
Exo 12:21-36 {s+p} strong theme
So what is the strong theme? The first thing I noticed is that the A pair does not show an equivalence but rather a cause and effect. Israel applied the blood of the Passover lamb to the doorposts of their houses (1A), and the when the angel of death passed over them but struck the firstborn of Egypt, Israel was delivered from their slavery in Egypt and sent out of the land in haste (2A). This is the Torah preaching the gospel of grace again. When we apply the blood of the Passover Lamb to the doorposts of our hearts, we are delivered from slavery to sin, death, and all the power of the devil, embodied in the kingdom of darkness, and set free as a citizen of the kingdom of heaven. Hallelujah!
Strong theme: When Israel applied the blood of the passover lamb, they were delivered from death, and set free from slavery.
