“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chr 7:14
We learned that the Ten Commandments summarize the Torah, which is God’s definition of righteousness and wickedness. If He is calling us to turn from our wicked ways, so that He can hear us from heaven, forgive our sin, and heal our land, we ought to know what He considers righteous and wicked, so that we can turn from it!
Commandments 1-5 (Love God) | Commandments 6-10 (Love your neighbor) |
1. Have no other gods before God; | 6. You shall not murder; |
2. You shall not make idols to worship; | 7. You shall not commit adultery; |
3. You shall not profane the name of YHVH; | 8. You shall not steal; |
4. You shall honor the Sabbath day to keep it holy; | 9. You shall not bear false witness; |
5. Honor your father and mother; | 10. You shall not covet. |
Deuteronomy, the final book of Torah, is the book in which Moses undertakes to “explain this Torah” to Israel, as his last act before he passes on and Joshua leads the people into the promised land (Deu 1:5). He does so by explaining what it means to keep the Ten Commandments. The Ten are further summarized by the Two Great Commandments (Mat 22:37-40), and that the Two are summarized by the one verb, Love (Rom 13:8-10). We saw that the Torah, the Law of God, is the Law of Love.
