Essential Studies.
Jeremiah 32 and 33, Root, Branch and seed of righteousness
Additional studies: Jeremiah Index (in process)
Branch is in Hebrew, Strong’s H6779, tsemach, a sprout or branch, fruit or produce. One of the first laws of the universe which God created, is the law of like kind: a seed will produce the same thing as itself. The Seed of David, who is Messiah, will be a Branch of Righteousness, which will produce the fruit of righteousness in the earth. If the Branch is righteousness, it’s root would also have to be righteousness: the Promised Seed of Gen 3:15, is not only the Branch of David, but also the Root of David. And if He is the Seed in us, then our fruit will also be righteousness – that is the nature of that Seed!
Psalm 138:8, Perfecting what concerns me
Additional studies: Psalms, Book Five: Psalms 107-150 Index
When a garden has been wrought out of a wild patch of weeds; when a horse has been tamed to the command of the horseman, when a child has been tamed to the teaching of his parents, and when we have bent our wills to the teaching of our Shepherd contained in Torah, then we are perfected. The Hebrew is painting quite a different definition of “perfect” from what we have been told, and it is quite liberating for those, like myself, who are recovering perfectionists.
2 Peter 3, New heavens and earth
Additional studies: 1 & 2 Peter Index
This present heavens and earth will cease to be as it currently is. The universe has been corrupted by sin and death (Rom 8:19-22). It is ruled by laws of physics which govern its decay (e.g., The Second Law of Thermodynamics).
But according to His promise, we await a new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. 2 Pet 3:13
The Greek word is Strong’s G2537, καινός kainós, ‘new as respect to form or quality, renewed.’ It is not new as respect to age, there is a different Greek word for that. In fact this is the same word used throughout the Greek Testament to describe the New or Renewed Covenant. We can infer that the fire judgment will not cause this physical universe to cease to exist, but that it will be renewed in a way that its physics will not govern its decay but its continuation in righteousness.
