Essential Studies.
Jeremiah 27 and 28, Chiastic structure
Additional studies: Jeremiah Index (in process)
YHVH establishes His authority in Jer 27:5, as the Creator of all, to place in power who He is pleased to place in power; He then identifies Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, as His servant (also in Jer 25:9 and Jer 43:10). But Nebuchadnezzar is a pagan, an idolater, and a Babylonian! God has raised up Gentile kings—superpowers—over and over again, for His own purpose. Pharaoh was the enslaver of the Hebrews (Exo 9:16), Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the city and the Temple, which Cyrus, the pagan king of Persia, paid to rebuild (Isa 44:28). When Yeshua returns, then we will have the perfect King of righteousness ruling over us, but not until then.
Psalm 120, Chiastic structure
Additional studies: Psalms, Book Five: Psalms 107-150 Index
And lies are how he steals, kills, and destroys from us. His power was broken at the cross and at the resurrection; now the only power he has is to try to convince us to agree with him when he lies. We give him power he has no right to when we receive his lying words instead of the Father’s truthful ones!
James 1, Testing the faith
Additional studies: James Index
A trial is a circumstance that tries us. It stretches our patience, or resources, or mental or physical capacity in some way. We are out of our comfort zone. No one is immune from falling into trials, as James puts it. These adverse life circumstances require us to put the full weight of our life on the promises God has made. We are like a man crossing a footbridge he has never encountered before. He must step out onto the bridge in faith, hoping that it will hold him. When it does, he has tested the bridge’s strength and found that it supported him. This faith produces endurance.
