This week we celebrated Passover and are celebrating Unleavened Bread. The command in Scripture is to go through the house and remove all the leaven, even all the crumbs which might contain leaven. The tradition of spring cleaning comes from this command, and I have been busy the past few weeks, moving furniture, sweeping, cleaning, and scrubbing. Leaven is a picture in the natural world of sin that might be lurking in our hearts, which will grow if left unchecked. Am I as assiduous about cleaning the very last traces of sin out of my heart, as I am about cleaning the very last crumbs of leaven out of my house? May I never neglect one in favor of the other, but let me attend to the weightier matters of Torah, while I am tithing dill and mint and cumin! ♥
