On Sunday, January 11th, 2015, my husband and I attended a special seminar at Ruach Ministries International (Brandon, Florida) with Brad Scott of Wildbranch Ministries. As Brad Scott is one of my very favorite teachers in the body of Messiah today, I was very much looking forward to this and was not at all disappointed. This week I am reconstructing the cramped notes I took (3 hours!) and posting it here. Please realize that the following is my interpretation of Brad’s message, coming through my own unique filter. If you disagree with something, don’t lay it at Brad’s doorstep. He is in the process of writing a book, with David Jones of Ruach, on this topic, and when that is out, you will get Brad’s message without filters.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” Mat 23:23
Our relationship with God and with each other is a weightier matter of Torah. If the two greatest commandments in Torah are Love God, and Love Your Neighbor, then our relationship with God and our relationships with each other are weightier matters of Torah. Today Torah observers run after the latest, greatest teachings of the most famous Torah teachers, learning the latest and greatest way to tithe dill, mint, and cumin, and neglect the weightier matters of relationship with God and relationship with each other — those who are local to you in your own every day life.
When things become difficult in the days ahead, it is not the famous Torah teachers who will walk through the hard times with you, but God and your real life neighbor. It is far better to strengthen those relationships now, and to live life together with your neighbors now, than it is to run to and fro gathering all the latest teachings to yourself.
