If there is one piece of wisdom I could leave to my children and grandchildren, that they could listen to and take into their hearts and apply (and not just hear only), it would be:
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Mat 6:33
“Seek” means, according to Webster’s, “ to resort to, to go to; to go in search of, to look for; to try to discover; to ask for; to try to acquire or gain, to aim at.” We resort to our God – first, not last.
Seeking His kingdom is not a one time deal, where we say the sinner’s prayer and done – we have sought His kingdom! No, no. It is daily, first thing in the morning, seeking God first before diving in to the work of the day. Every day. It is daily evaluating, “Is Jesus Christ my King as well as my Savior? May I have Your help, Lord, in seeking out those places in my heart where You are not King, and may I repent, and may Your Kingdom, where You are King, COME in my heart and life today.”
If we are living, every day, in His kingdom, where He is king over our lives, where His will is our command and His will is what we seek that day to do, then guess who becomes responsible for you? He does. That is why He is able to say, “All these things will be added to you.” It does not matter what Wall Street is doing or what the world is doing or who wins elections or which tyrant is making threats. Or whether Mom and Dad move to Florida. Those things simply do not have the power to DISRUPT His promises.
But if we are living, every day, in our own kingdom, where we are king over our lives, where we are the ones calling the shots, then guess who becomes responsible for you? YOU DO. Your own strength, wisdom, and resources becomes the MAXIMUM available to you. That is one scary thought. THE ARM OF FLESH WILL FAIL YOU (Ps 146:3, Isa 30:1, Jer 17:5). But that is the place the enemy SEEKS to keep you by lying to you, whatever lies keep you from walking in Mat 6:33. He kills, steals, and destroys by those lies – and what he is SEEKING to kill, steal, and destroy, is you. Keeping you king over your own kingdom is one of the quickest tools he has to accomplish that.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Heb 4:16
