It was not the word of Sennacherib which came to pass, but the word of YHVH. With Sennacherib’s word, all the circumstances seemed to say that his word would surely come to pass – but it didn’t. With YHVH’s word concerning the Babylonians, all the circumstances seemed to say that His word would surely NOT come to pass–the Babylonians came with gifts and friendship and esteem. But, it did. And that is the strong theme. ♥

The repeating plea to be restored to God might indicate that it was Israel that wandered away, that it was Israel that turned back from God (vs.18), thus their troubles are not a result of God being capricious, but as is often the case, a result of their own choices, which God allows … because trouble often causes us to stop and examine where we are, and where God is. He wants them, and us, restored to Himself as well (teshuvah)!

But as a parent, what is your response when someone makes it their mission to persecute your child? You make an end to the persecution, by whatever means necessary. God feels the same way, but is also in the unique position of wanting His children’s persecutors to also come to know Him, to also become His child. The testimony of faith and patience despite suffering witnesses to the unbeliever of the validity of the faith of the persecuted. While God recompenses persecutors, it is not immediate. He leaves room for His children’s witness to work.
