Isaiah 61 and 62, Good news for the poor
Additional studies: Isaiah Index
“Poor” means poor not only materially, but in spirit (Mat 5:3, Isa 66:2). To be poor in spirit means to have a humble, lowly, and contrite heart; an afflicted or downcast mind, which prefers to bear injuries suffered rather than to retaliate in kind. The poor in spirit sees and knows his shortcomings and inadequacies, and is grieved by them. His weaknesses afflict his soul; he trembles at the word of YHVH, because in it he recognizes that he has fallen short; and he is aware of his need for a Savior.
Psalm 91, Dwelling in the secret place, part two
Additional studies: Psalms, Book Four: Psalms 90-106 Index
The man who knows His God, knows He is a God of His Word, who loves righteousness and justice, who fully keeps His word, and who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The God of Gen 1, of Exo 20, yes, of Leviticus, is the God who became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth. The Word of Gen 1, Exo 20, and Leviticus put on flesh and died on the cross – who rose and is coming to judge the living and the dead.
1 Timothy 5, Chiastic structure
Additional studies: 1 & 2 Timothy Index
Humans need something worthwhile to occupy their time and attention. Children fill this need by school and play, women by managing their households, and men by working to provide for their families. Someone with character will find or create a worthwhile occupation for themselves; someone without character, being idle, wanders about from house to house (sticking their nose in everybody else’s business), being busybodies, gossiping, and saying what they should not.
