Essential Studies.
Jonah 3 and 4, Nineveh’s repentance
Additional studies: Jonah Index
The repentance of the city endured for that generation (Mat 12:41), probably beginning in the reign of the great- great- grandson of Asshurnazirpal, another Shalmaneser, to that of Asshurnirari, his youngest brother (781 to 747 BC). During this juncture the Assyrian kings suddenly left off the career of cruel conquest upon which they had been engaged for more than one hundred years. The kings instead stayed “in the land” according to their inscriptions. It is not mere coincidence that this drastic change in the character of the Assyrian kings took place during the lifetime of Jonah. Please note that the vengeful, wrathful, judgmental, angry God of the Old Testament is a lie and a myth, and that the God of the Old Testament is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm (Jon 4:2).
Psalm 52, Evil vs. Edifying Tongue
Additional studies: Psalms, Book Two: Psalms 42-72 Index
The righteousness of the righteous, on the other hand, is in his edifying tongue. Praise, thanksgiving, and gratitude pours out of his mouth in the assembly of the faithful. His trust is in the steadfast love of God, where he deeply planted in the house of God (not a dwelling of his own making) withstanding all the barbs the wicked launch his way. ♥
Galatians 6, Do not be decieved
Additional studies: Galatians Index
Don’t be deceived into thinking that because someone believes the right doctrine, or attends the right church, all is fine, because God is not deceived. The fruit or works that come out of a person’s life reveal whether they are walking by the flesh or by the Spirit. Since those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires, fruit reveals faith.
