We saw in Ezekiel the presence of God depart from the Temple in Jerusalem. In Jeremiah, we saw the destruction of the Temple and the captivity of the people. The emphasis in Zechariah is the rebuilding of the Temple, the return of God to Jerusalem, the restoration of His people to Jerusalem and the Land, and the circumstances surrounding those events. These are the events we are living in, in our generation!

Verse 10 is translated in the NKJV as, “Divination is on the lips of the king;” however, the Hebrew Bible in English has it as, “A divine sentence is on the lips of the king.” This verse has been used historically to maintain that anyone who is king had a divine right to rule, and the judgment of his lips was as if a prophet had said, “Thus saith YHVH.” However, the meaning of the verse is that since the king’s judgment determines life and death for his people (see vs. 14, “The wrath of a king is as messengers of death”), judging in the place of God until the Day of Judgment, then his lips had better not transgress in their judgment—he is under an extreme responsibility to make sure his judgment is just.

If we count the heads and horns on these four beasts of Daniel’s vision, we come up with seven heads and ten horns. In other words, Daniel and John are seeing the same thing: Daniel saw four distinct beasts or ruling empires, because they were future to him, at least, he was living during the reign of the first beast. John saw a single beast, the great dragon, because for the most part, these beasts were all past to him. He was living (as we are) during the reign of the fourth beast. Daniel’s vision tells us that the beasts are world- dominating empires. They are, in fact, a representation of the kingdoms of this world.
