There are seven prophetic messages recorded in Zechariah, and together they form a single chiastic structure:
1a) Zec 1:1-6 {s} Return to Me and I will return to you, do not be like your fathers who would not heed;
1b) Zec 1:7-6:8 chiastic structure {sx3+p+sx3+p+s+s+p+sx3} The worthy Shepherd builds the temple by Grace + Spirit;
1c) Zec 6:9-15 {s} Crown Yeshua the high priest, saying, Behold, the Branch/ He shall build the temple of YHVH;
1a) Zec 6:9, Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying;
1b) Zec 6:10, Take the gift from the captives from Babylon: Heldai, Tobijah, Jedaiah, to Josiah the son of Zephaniah;
1c) Zec 6:11a, Take the silver and gold, make an elaborate crown;
1d) Zec 6:11b-12a, Crown Yeshua (son of YHVH is righteous) the high priest/ Behold, the BRANCH!;
central axis) Zec 6:12b-13a, He shall build the temple of YHVH (repeated twice for emphasis);
2d) Zec 6:13b, He shall bear the glory + rule on His throne as priest/ counsel of peace between them both;
2c) Zec 6:14a, The elaborate crown shall be for a memorial in the temple of YHVH;
2b) Zec 6:14b-15a, For Helem, Tobijah, Jedaiah, son of Zephaniah/ from afar they shall come to build the temple of YHVH;
2a) Zec 6:15b, Then you shall know that YHVH of hosts has sent Me to you;
conclusion) Zec 6:15c {s} This shall come to pass if you diligently obey the voice of YHVH your God.
central axis) Zec 7:1-8:23 chiastic structure {px3+s+s+p+sx3+p+s+s} Restoration of His people to the Land + His return to the Land;
2c) Zec 9:1-11:3 chiastic structure {s+px3} The lowly King of Zion is coming who will take up His dominion/ Judah + Ephraim restored;
2b) Zec 11:4-17 chiastic structure {s+p+p} Worthless owners + shepherds/ Grace broken, Unity sundered;
2a) Zec 12:1-14:21 chiastic structure {p+p+s+p} The nations gathered, YHVH’s return to Jerusalem + His people’s salvation.
A pair: YHVH pleads for His people to return to Him/ He will return to them. The 2a structure contains the details of His physical return.
B pair: The worthy Shepherd of the house of David contrasted with the worthless shepherds. The tools of the worthy Shepherd are the Spirit and Grace. The shepherd’s staffs broken and sundered by the worthless shepherds are Grace and Unity. This structure matches the Spirit (not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit) with the Unity of Judah and Ephraim, indicating that the prophesied restoration of the two to one people will be by no other agency than the Spirit of God. It is not something which can be legislated by man. The Shepherd of the house of David builds the temple, which is not mentioned directly in 2B. However, it can be inferred that the temple will be built by Grace, the Spirit, and Unity (Joh 17:6-26). I believe the temple Yeshua builds is the temple of His body (Joh 2:19-21).
C pair: The emphasis in 1C is the high priest, the emphasis in 2C is the King. However the high priest in 1C is crowned, and rules on His throne as priest. Thus the rule of the Branch will be as both High Priest, and King. The emphasis in 1C of those who will build the temple, is that they have come from afar; the emphasis in 2C is that Judah + Ephraim are restored to the Land from afar. The inference is that Judah + Ephraim will come from afar to build the temple. I think this means, since the Messiah is clearly the One who builds the temple (of His body), that Judah + Ephraim comprise the living stones which Messiah fits together into the house for YHVH’s name (1 Pet 2:4-5).
We saw in Ezekiel the presence of God depart from the Temple in Jerusalem. In Jeremiah, we saw the destruction of the Temple and the captivity of the people. The emphasis in Zechariah is the rebuilding of the Temple, the return of God to Jerusalem, the restoration of His people to Jerusalem and the Land, and the circumstances surrounding those events. These are the events we are living in, in our generation!
