Theme of the Parashah
I have been meditating on the overarching theme of Shoftim every year during its week, for several years, and am not yet ready to say that I have got it. I will say Shoftim opens with the explanation of the 5th commandment, Honor your father and mother, from Deu 16:18-18:22, and concludes with the explanation of the 6th, You shall not murder, from Deu 19:1-21:9. So honoring YHVH’s delegated authority and honoring the sanctity of life are connected in Shoftim. Is preserving and protecting life the greatest responsibility of delegated authority? I am meditating on that …
