Read Exodus 12 at Bible Gateway.
And the blood shall be a sign for you upon the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will hover protectively over the door, and the plague shall not come upon you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt. Exo 12:13
For YHVH will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel, and on the two side posts of the door, YHVH will hover protectively over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in to your houses to strike you. Exo 12:23
The word translated “Passover” in English Bibles is from Strong’s H6452 פסח pasach, “to hover over.” The ancient pictographs are pey + sin + chet.
pey פ ף = mouth (open, blow, scatter, edge)
sin ס = thorn (grab, hate, protect)
chet ח = wall (outside, divide, half)
The parable being told by the Hebrew Root Word is to open wide (pey, in the sense of a mother hen opening her wings to gather all her brood under them) protection (sin) so the hurt is kept outside (chet). The Angel of Death didn’t skip over any houses when he went through the land of Egypt. YHVH hovered over the doors where the blood was, and actively kept it out.
Why This Matters:
For Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed. 1 Cor 5:7b
This history really happened—every lamb, every drop of blood, every midnight cry—and yet it is History that Prophesies of the Gospel of grace. When we trust in the blood of Yeshua, our true Passover Lamb, and apply it by faith to the doorposts of our hearts, YHVH Himself hovers protectively over us. We are delivered from slavery to sin, death, and all the power of the devil inherent in the kingdom of darkness, and set free as a citizen of the kingdom of heaven. :
