A university professor at Yeshiva University, a conservative private university founded on and teaching Judaism and Torah, went on leave two years ago as a man, just a few weeks after receiving his tenure, and returned last week as a woman. Even though it flies on the face of Torah, and the university’s principles, the university is allowing it because the professor, Mr. Jay Ladin, is threatening a legal battle if they do not.
Religious universities should be allowed to hire (and fire) like- minded and like- living individuals (and non- like- minded, and non- like- living individuals) just as churches can or ought to, and just as religious private schools can or ought to. Our non- discriminatory laws go too far when they require RELIGIOUS institutions to non- descriminate in favor of those who do not observe the same RELIGIOUS views or lifestyle.
The comments on this story are all over the map, but most preach love, tolerance, and hooray for the professor, while some agree with God and His word. There is one commenter who said that since the professor earned his tenure as a man, he should be required to show up to work and do his job as a man. Such common sense, and I completely agree. Cannot a good contract lawyer prove for the university that since the contracts were made and signed by "Jay Ladin," it is to "Jay Ladin" and no one else that the contract applies?
Anyway, I was wondering if it is part design on the trans- and gay community, to secure these positions while deceitfully portraying yourself in compliance with university policies, and then once the position is secure, to switch and threaten legal action – in other words, to force the offensive lifestyle down the institution’s throat. There are tons of universities out there which would have no problem with Mr. Jay Ladin, no matter who he came to work dressed like. So why Yeshiva? Because it offends them to their core, that’s why. It is the highest form of deceit and disrespect. For someone practicing that level of dishonesty and disrespect to demand HONEST RESPECT in return, is staggeringly arrogant.
