jeremiah 19 and 20

Jeremiah chapters 13 through 20 chiastic structure:

1a) Jer 13:1-15:21, Object lesson, plea for repentance/ repentance rejected, destruction assured/ Jeremiah’s reproach;

1) Jer 13:1-27 {p+p+sx5} Object lesson of the linen sash/ plea for repentance rejected + they have forgotten Me;

a) Jer 13:1-10 {p+p+s} The object lesson of the linen sash;

Jer 13:1-2 {p} YHVH to Jeremiah: Get a linen sash, and gird your waist with it/ Jeremiah did
Jer 13:3-7 {p} Hide the sash in a hole in the rock, and after many days dig it up/ Jeremiah did, it was ruined
Jer 13:8-10 {s} So I will ruin the pride of Judah + Jerusalem, for this evil people are profitable for nothing

b) Jer 13:11-17 {s+s} Plea for repentance: I am your glory; if you refuse I will not have mercy, therefore repent now;

Jer 13:11-12a {s} As a sash clings to the waist, so this people cling to Me for glory, but they will not hear
Jer 13:12b-17 {s} I will fill this people with drunkenness and not have mercy/ hear + give God glory + repent now

c) Jer 13:18-19 {s} Repentance rejected: humble yourselves, for Judah shall be carried captive;
d) Jer 13:20-27 {s} Because you have forgotten Me + trusted falsehood, you will be ashamed;

2) Jer 14:1-22 chiastic structure {s+p+p} I will not accept My people, but punish their sins/ they will be consumed;

3) Jer 15:1-9 {s} YHVH will not relent, but death, sword, famine, captivity will come upon His people;

Jer 15:17-18 {s} Jeremiah’s complaint: I have not sat with the wicked, so why is my pain incurable;
Jer 15:19-21 {s} YHVH’s answer: Let them return to you, but you must not return to them/ I will be with you;

1b) Jer 16:1-11 {s+s+p} Destruction is coming on this place, because they have forsaken Me + not kept My Law;

1c) Jer 16:12-13 {p} You follow your evil heart/ I will cast you out + in a foreign land you will serve other gods;

1d) Jer 16:14-16 {p} The days are coming when YHVH will bring Israel back/ fishermen shall fish for them;

central axis) Jer 16:17-18 {p} “For My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from My face, nor is their iniquity hidden from My eyes. And first I will repay double for their iniquity and their sin, because they have defiled My land; they have filled My inheritance with the carcasses of their detestable and abominable idols;”

2d) Jer 16:19-21 {s} YHVH my refuge, the Gentiles shall come from the ends of the earth, they will know Your name;

2c) Jer 17:1-13 {sx4} Judah follows her evil heart/ She will serve her enemies in a land she does not know;

2b) Jer 17:14-27 {s+p} Let not destruction come upon me/ keep My Sabbath, and it will not;

1) Jer 18:1-23, Object lesson of the potter’s vessel/ plea for repentance rejected + My people have forgotten Me;

a) Jer 18:1-6 {s+s} The object lesson of the potter’s vessel;
b) Jer 18:7-11 {s+s} Plea for repentance: If you repent, I will relent of disaster, therefore turn from evil;
c) Jer 18:12 {p} Repentance rejected: They said, It is hopeless/ we will walk by the dictates of our evil hearts;
d) Jer 18:13-23 {s+s} My people have forgotten Me, therefore disaster/ plot against Jeremiah, his prayer;

2) Jer 19:1-14 {p+p+s} Judah’s sin at the Valley of Hinnom (Tophet)/ Catastrophe, they will be slaughtered;

Do not reject the plea for repentance when you hear it, for YHVH is waiting to have mercy on you! But if you harden your heart and stiffen your neck, then disaster is decreed against you.
