ESSENTIAL STUDIES.
1 Kings 4, Multiplication
Additional studies: 1 and 2 Kings Index
Forty thousand horses is a multiplied amount. We know that Solomon loved YHVH (1 Kin 3:3), but this seemingly slight deviation from YHVH’s commandment for kings plants the first seed of compromise. We will see that 90% obedience to God is still disobedience with disastrous results.
Proverbs 28:17-29:17, Chiastic structure
Additional studies: Proverbs Index
Just as a wise son, who became wise by the correction of his father, gives his father rest, and a wise king gives his throne rest by judging truthfully, so does the one who walks blamelessly. He will be saved by his wisdom, which is to say, by his uprightness. And by “saved,” we are not talking about eternal salvation … the context of the book of Proverbs speaks to the wise management of the affairs of this life, on this side of heaven.
Luke 8, Taking heed how we hear
Additional studies: Luke Index
Those who take heed how they hear, who have ears to hear, will be given more light, sight, and understanding. How do we have ears to hear? The parable of the sower explains it. The foundation of good soil is belief in the word heard (which in the Hebraic worldview, means doing as well as hearing), coupled with a determination to not forget it, to make time for it, to not exalt temporal things above it, and to cultivate depth of soil. But if anyone wants to be in the inner circle club, and not in the outsider club who hears but does not understand, Jesus is not excluding you or preventing you. We ourselves determine to which club we belong. He is no respecter of persons! Aren’t you glad? ♥
