Essential Studies.
Genesis 4:26, “Then men profanely began”
Additional studies: Genesis Index
Men did not merely begin to call [upon] the name of YHVH. The Hebrew reveals that men began to profane the name of YHVH. The root of “to begin to profane,” chalal, is the bow drill, a tool used to make an ingress into a material so that it might be split, that is weakened. To profane something sacred is to weaken its sanctity in the eyes of the people commanded to hold it sacred. In each of the Scriptural instances where men began to profane in Gen 1-11, society was weakened until “the wickedness of man was great in the earth.”
Jeremiah 26, then 25, then 35, Righteousness restored to a nation
Additional studies: Jeremiah Index (in process)
When nations and people choose to ignore YHVH’s voice and discard His commandments, it hurts them. It does not hurt Him, other than the grief it brings to His heart (Gen 6:5-6). But what can we do or do not to diminish Him? He is on His throne and He reigns, regardless of what nations and people do or do not. Our disobedience or wickedness hurts only ourselves. When we disobey Him, we are seeking evil, curses, decrease, unhappiness, and poverty for ourselves and our neighbors.
Psalm 109, The accusations of the wicked
Additional studies: Psalms, Book Five: Psalms 107-150 Index
So that is why, whenever you hear the accusation in your heart, you know who is speaking that to you. It is not God. God edifies and encourages. God said to Gideon, who was hiding in the wine press, “Hail, you mighty man of valor!” When we allow our mouths to be used to accuse another, we have just partnered with Satan in his work. Let not a wicked mouth be found among us, O God! ♥
